More Than Just Coffee, It’s a Way of Life
by Cielo Cloud
As a child, I remember waking up every morning to the smell of coffee. As part of my father’s morning ritual, he woke at 4:30am every morning and had coffee as he read the daily paper. It was how my father started his day for as long as I can remember. Early on, I saw it as a part of daily life.
In my college years, I remember those long late study nights with my friends, cramming for finals over coffee. I don’t remember always liking the taste but I drank it because it helped me stay awake and it also helped me get up many mornings after very little sleep. Most of my friends drank it for the same reasons and I don’t know what I would have did without it then.
When I was in Corporate America, the break room was always a busy hub in the morning. People were in and out or anxiously waiting in line at the coffee machine for their first or second cup of coffee. I remember dreading to be the person who had to brew the next batch if it ran out. If it did, people groaned out loud and waited as we all watched the coffee brew. Everyone was in a hurry and on a mission to get their cup and go back to their desk. Again, part of everyone’s daily routine.
Today, now that I work from home, I still enjoy my daily morning coffee but in addition, it is more of a social or a business thing. When a girlfriend calls, we are quick to say, “let’s meet for coffee!” or when meeting with a client, I always suggest meeting at a coffee house to discuss business over coffee.
During the holidays or special occasions, it has been a tradition to have coffee with our desserts. It was something we looked forward to. It was comforting and a special time for us to gather and talk.
After thinking back and realizing all of this, it does not surprise me at all, that coffee is the 2nd most consumed beverage in the world next to water and it is one of the most highly traded commodities in the world next to oil. That is incredible to me! That is a lot of consumption. Can you imagine how many people are drinking coffee today? How about trying something healthier?
So in essence, it is much more than just coffee, it is a way of life, a tradition, and a strong part of our culture not just in America but all over the world.
